It is the duty of parents or legal guardians to monitor their children's online activity and implement parental controls in such a way as to ensure real safety for children in the digital age. Parents have the most opportunities to control their children's activities by using tools available in modern operating systems and devices.

Below are some simple guidelines and tips on how to restrict your child's access to inappropriate content.

Parental Control Tools

  1. Operating Systems: Both Windows, macOS, and mobile systems (Android and iOS) have built-in parental control features. For example

    1. Windows offers the "Microsoft Family Safety" feature.

    2. macOS and iOS have "Screen Time",

    3. Android provides the option to use the "Parental Control" feature in Google Play and the Google Family Link app.

  2. Antivirus programs and security software: Most antivirus programs (e.g., Norton, Kaspersky, ESET) offer packages with additional parental control features, such as website filtering or activity monitoring.

  3. Third-party applications: The mOchrona app - designed for parents with children in mind. mOchrona is a free application by the National Educational Network (OSE), a project carried out by NASK-PIB. It helps minimize the risk of exposure to harmful content and allows you to set access rules, including for social media. Additionally, software like Qustodio, Net Nanny, or Kaspersky Safe Kids offers extensive monitoring, content filtering, reporting, and screen time control features. These tools are available on various platforms, making it easy to use them across multiple devices simultaneously.

  4. Routers with parental control function: Some modern routers allow managing internet access across the entire home network, enabling parents to determine which content will be accessible on each device.

Ready-made parental control tools are undoubtedly helpful in supervising a child's online activity, but they cannot replace educating and making the child aware of the dangers lurking online. Talk to your child about the reasons why parental control is necessary, and also prepare them to use the Internet safely and responsibly.
